Preparing for a Substitute

If you need to be absent, ensure that your students’ instruction continues by planning ahead. Prepare your students by designating one or two who can answer questions about procedures and help the substitute locate materials. If you are an ATPE member, try using the ATPE Substitute Teacher Folder. This tool will help you organize your classroom plans.

The information you gather should include a welcome note, names of helpful teachers and students; a student roster; a seating chart and discipline rules; a daily schedule; lesson plans with detailed instructions; sample absentee slips; emergency procedures and extra assignments for students who finish early.
