Tax-free weekend in Texas runs from Friday, Aug. 5, through midnight Sunday, Aug. 7. This is the perfect time to pick up back-to-school items tax-free.

Items that qualify for free sales tax this weekend include clothing, footwear, school supplies, face masks, and backpacks. The total sale price must be below $100, however, to qualify. The Texas Comptroller's website has the full list of qualifying items and more information, but here are some examples:

• Binders
• Calculators
• Composition books
• Crayons
• Erasers
• Folders
• Glue
• Lunch boxes
• Paper
• Pencils
• Scissors

Face masks, either cloth or disposable, also fit the criteria for clothing and are also exempt from a sales tax.

It is important to remember what does not qualify as well. If the total sales price is over $100, the item is not exempt. Neither are jewelry, purses, briefcases, computers, software, textbooks, wallets, and other accessories.

Items placed on layaway this weekend are also exempt from sales tax, as well as any qualifying items for which will make a final payment this weekend. Tax-free weekend also applies to items that are ordered online and over the phone.

Another note to remember: The $100 limit is based on the total sales price, and because shipping and handling can add up, it is important to keep that total sales price below $100 to qualify for free sales tax. If, however, there is a charged sales tax on qualifying items, the Comptroller’s website has a form to submit a refund request as well.
