Did you hear the news? We’ve uploaded even more SXSW EDU 2019 sessions to our Professional Learning Portal! (Did you miss the first batch of sessions? Find out more here!) SXSW EDU is one of the most well-known education conferences not only in Texas but also across the nation.
As an ATPE member, you have access to our online learning portal, where you can earn continuing professional education (CPE) credit on your own time via online courses and webinars. Course access is included in your membership. You can also track your CPE hours and certificates through the ATPE PL Portal, making it easy to maintain a comprehensive history of your professional learning.

Affinity as Identity, for a Real Social Media
Social media is neither social nor media, and it’s tearing us apart. In this session, Ron Suskind—a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist and founder and chief executive officer of The Affinity Project, a research and technology company—offers a fresh alternative, inspired by brilliant folks on the spectrum, who connect best to others and the world through their deep and varied interests. We come at connection from the opposite direction, as users gather online in real time around favorite content, turning their passions into a new kind of screen-sharing, bond-building, affinity-based network that’ll change education, therapy, and reverse social isolation.
Fulfilling the Promise of Talent
Dallas launched a Promise program in the fall of 2017 resulting in 35% growth in community college enrollment in one year. After a $3 million investment from JPM Chase, the Dallas County Promise is actively helping other regions across Texas build talent pipelines to support over 5% of American high school students. This session showcases regional leadership and explores building scalable and effective school-to-work pathways to leverage the power of free college tuition.
Governors & Education: 2019 & Beyond
In November 2018, 39 gubernatorial races occurred across the United States and its territories. Three months into a new gubernatorial term, the NGA Education Division is excited to share findings from their research. What can the public expect from US governors around education in 2019 and beyond? This session will explore these trends and discern what these policy priorities could mean for the education community, the role of philanthropy, and how NGA is prepared to support governors moving forward.
How to Teach Financial Literacy, & Why We Must
Being able to manage your money—pay bills, make a budget, maintain good credit—is a critical life skill. Yet the vast majority of schools don’t require financial literacy instruction, and even when they do teachers often don’t feel qualified to teach it. What can be done to bring personal finance into the educational mainstream? This panel will talk about what works, what doesn't, and why we must do better.
Students' Safety or Privacy? Why Not Both?
As the debate about how to keep students safe in American schools continues to reverberate around the country, privacy experts have spoken about the risks of sacrificing students’ privacy rights in the name of security. But are the two mutually exclusive? Various news articles have highlighted the privacy risks of allowing law enforcement unfettered discretion regarding security and the limits of its effectiveness. Privacy IS possible. This panel will discuss how to balance privacy and security.
