A component of the Raising Texas Teachers initiative, the Charles Butt Scholarship for Aspiring Teachers is designed to encourage the best and brightest students to consider a future in the teaching profession. Here’s everything you need to know about this scholarship opportunity.

The Charles Butt Scholarship supports extraordinary students to enter the teaching profession. Charles Butt Scholarship recipients are passionate aspiring educators seeking to make a difference for public school students.

The Scholarship includes $8,000–$10,000 in annual funding for up to four years, professional development opportunities, mentorship, and participation in a statewide aspiring teachers network.

The scholarship is open to applicants who believe in the importance of public education, are leaders in their communities, and reflect the diversity of the state of Texas. To be eligible, applicants must be committed to teaching in a majority-economically disadvantaged school or in a shortage subject area in a Texas public school.

This year, approximately 100 scholarships will be awarded through teacher preparation programs at our partner universities, which are:

  • Our Lady of the Lake University
  • UT Austin College of Education
  • Texas A&M University
  • Rice University
  • Southern Methodist University
  • Trinity University
  • University of Houston
  • University of North Texas–Dallas
  • UT–Rio Grande Valley
  • UT Austin UTeach Natural Sciences
  • Texas Tech University

The application opens each fall for seniors in high school to juniors in college. The deadlines for the 2020-21 scholarship application are different for each partner university and range from December 2020 through April 2021.
