The American Geosciences Institute organized the first Earth Science Week in 1998 to help the public gain a better understanding and appreciation for Earth sciences. The celebration is also intended to encourage responsible stewardship of the Earth. Earth Science Week runs from October 10-16, 2021.

This year, the theme of Earth Science Week is “Water Today and for the Future” and focuses on the importance of learning how to understand, conserve, and protect water in the 21st century. Students are encouraged to explore the importance of water and water science for living things, Earth systems, and the many activities that people undertake.

At earthscienceweek.org, you can explore a variety of resources to help commemorate this week with your students, including:

  • Focus Days: Explore specific themes each day of the week.
  • Contests: Encourage students to enter video, photography, visual arts, or essay contests.
  • Classroom Activities: Find suggested Earth science-related activities for different grade levels.
  • Events: Search for events near you, including several for educators in the Houston area.
