International Thank You Day is celebrated every year on Jan. 11. It was created to remind people of the importance of saying “thank you” and expressing their gratitude to those who have positively impacted their lives.

We may neglect to thank others for a variety of different reasons. We could assume somebody already knows how we feel, or we might take their help for granted. The start of a new year is a popular time for self-reflection and contemplating ways to improve oneself. International Thank You Day is a great reminder to also reflect on ways to show more appreciation.

Here are some ways you can show appreciation for those that make your life better:

Write a thank-you note
Whether it is a handwritten note or just an email, everyone loves hearing how much you appreciate them.

Actually say “thank you” or “I’m grateful”
Make it a point to verbalize your gratitude toward others regularly and often. Practice this every day so it becomes a habit. Tell them in person or give them a quick phone call.

Perform a favor
Favors can really demonstrate to people how much you appreciate them. These can even be simple things, such as buying somebody coffee or helping them with an errand.

Offer a compliment
Let people know what it is exactly that you appreciate about them. Tell them they are kind, funny, or good listeners.

Pay it forward
Use your gratitude as motivation to perform a random act of kindness for somebody. This will make you feel better and help spread feelings of gratitude to others.

Offer a hug
Expressing your gratitude doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes a simple hug is the best way to let somebody know you appreciate them and that they mean a lot to you.

Whatever methods you choose, both you and those you care about will benefit from your efforts to be more intentional about expressing gratitude.
